Good Friday Outreach Highlights

On Good Friday, The Miami Rescue Mission (MRM) and Broward Outreach Centers (BOC), with the help of gold sponsor AmTrust Bank, served over 2,500 Thanksgiving-style meals to the homeless and hungry of South Florida at their three campuses located in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano Beach. Under the theme “Healing”, over 400 volunteers served a fantastic Thanksgiving-style meal that consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, and assorted pies. In addition to the meal, homeless and needy men, women and children in attendance were able to have their feet washed and cared for by volunteer students from Barry University’s Podiatry program. Showers and haircuts were also provided. At intake tables on each campus, homeless and needy attendees were offered help through MRM and BOC full-scale rehabilitation programs.

By providing these services, MRM and BOC hopes to inspire the homeless individuals taking part in the outreach to make the life-changing decision to enter one of the full-scale rehabilitation programs offered by MRM and BOC. By taking part in one of these programs, a homeless or needy individual can receive food, housing, education, job placement, and various other crucial services that allow these individuals to transform themselves into strong, industrious, independent, and renewed people.

Attendee and current resident Allan said about the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers, “I came here thinking I would just be here to eat and sleep for a few nights, but they offered me so much more. They offered me school, clothes, everything a person would need. If you listen to what the people here say, there is so much help that is offered. People will do something for you if you want to do something for yourself.”

Quincy, one of the attendees coming out to receive food and services said, “I woke up this morning with an empty stomach and now I am happy and full. Today is special because we are able to feel important again. This is really something to be thankful for.”

During the event, there was entertainment at each location for both children and adults. Attendees enjoyed live music, animated Easter-themed plays enacted by residents, a kid’s corner where children played happily on a moon bounce, cotton candy, games, a reading corner, and many other joyful activities. In Hollywood, music was provided by Scott Evans Productions.

Over 600 Easter baskets were passed out to each and every child in attendance at all three Centers in Miami and Broward. Guest speakers delivered messages of hope and change on each campus. In Pompano, Pastor Anthony Yorke from Harvest Preparation Ministries addressed the crowd with an uplifting speech. In Miami, former Miami Dolphins player, Jimmy Cefalo attended as the guest speaker.
Hollywood Commissioner Richard Blattner said, “It’s never too late to change. I had a personal experience where my friend was going through a difficult time, and my friend had such enduring faith. I saw how having faith is so important. I have applied this principle of having faith to my own life, and I have seen how having faith creates unimaginable change.”
Jimmy Cefalo, said of the event, “It is a pleasure to be here today and to see so many people looking happy and with smiles on their faces. The Miami Rescue Mission provides hope for a better future if you are living on the streets.”
All three campuses in Miami, Broward, and Pompano served in total over 2,500 meals. Each person attending also received MISSION HOPE purple bags which had necessary hygiene items inside such as toothbrushes, soap, and clean socks and underwear. Several thousand items of clothing were handed out, and many attendees were able to have long-standing health concerns addressed by clinic staff.
Rev. Ronald Brummitt, the President of the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers said, “The purpose of all of these efforts is to demonstrate love and compassion to the homeless. The environment of warmth and goodness caused many people to come off the streets and join us to be blessed with love. These outreaches really change lives in ways we cannot see until time has passed and people come back to us and tell us their stories of transformation. Many people came together for our Good Friday Outreach. People were contributing financially, volunteering their time, and holding drives for those in need. Following the example Jesus set by washing the feet of his disciples before being betrayed and crucified, volunteers washed and cared for the feet of the homeless. They also provided them with clothing and other necessities, served them food, and gave them hope that people care and want to help. Our supporters are so essential to our efforts to restore people’s spirits and help them to find a better path in life. We are so grateful to everyone who comes out to support our mission.”
